IOM Builds Ebola Screening Centre at Yei Airstrip

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has begun constructing a three-room container-based Ebola preparedness and screening facility at Yei Airstrip as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen disease surveillance and emergency response measures in the region.

According to workers at the site, the facility is expected to enhance health screening, monitoring and coordination at the airstrip, a key entry point into Yei River County.

The move comes as health authorities and humanitarian partners continue preparations against any potential Ebola outbreak in neighboring countries. Although no Ebola cases have been reported in South Sudan, Yei’s proximity to the Democratic Republic of Congo, approximately 28 miles away, has heightened preparedness efforts.

On Wednesday, Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo and County Security Advisor Juma David Augustine inspected the construction site to assess progress and evaluate the facility’s readiness to support public health emergency response activities.

The visit forms part of broader efforts to strengthen public health preparedness in the county and ensure that critical disease surveillance infrastructure is in place and operational.

Officials said the screening centre will play an important role in supporting early detection, monitoring, and response measures aimed at protecting communities from potential cross-border health threats.
