(LASU PAYAM, YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Residents of Lasu Payam in Yei River County are calling on the government and development partners to help restore medical services in the area.
The appeal comes after humanitarian health partners operating in the county suspended services in the Payam due to donor funding challenges two years ago.
Speaking to Access Radio on Thursday afternoon, Lasu Payam Community Chairperson Morris Logulomo said the lack of medical services has particularly affected pregnant women and children, with residents forced to travel long distances in search of treatment.
“We want organizations and the government to help us because sometimes patients die on the road while looking for medical care more especially pregnant mothers and children and we call for medical support to help the people in the community. Secondly, I call for peace so that humanitarian assistance can reach out to the people in the Payam.”
Residents say some people are resorting to traditional herbal remedies for common illnesses, while others travel to Yei town or cross into Aba in the Democratic Republic of Congo to seek medical attention.
Access Radio could not reach the Yei River County Health Department for comment on the matter at the time of publication.
Lasu Payam is located about 22 miles west of Yei town. Residents say the area has faced limited access to medical services since the outbreak of conflict in 2016.
