(TORE PAYAM, YEI COUNTY) – Residents of Mapoko Boma, also known as Adio, have voluntarily launched a bush-clearing exercise along the Maridi road to improve movement and promote local trade with Yei town.
The community mobilised its own labour, tools and resources to clear thick vegetation along sections of the road, which residents say has been affecting visibility and making movement difficult for traders and other road users.
Freelance journalist Christopher Taharir visited the area and spoke with community members about the initiative.
A community representative said residents decided to take action because of the road’s importance to farmers and traders transporting goods to markets in Yei.
“We decided we could no longer sit back and wait while our local economy suffered,” the representative said. “By clearing this road, we are directly helping our farmers and traders bring their goods to Yei town safely and efficiently.”
Local traders have welcomed the initiative, saying improved visibility and access along the road could ease movement, reduce transport delays and create a safer environment for trade.
Residents say the voluntary exercise demonstrates how communities can mobilise their own resources to address local infrastructure challenges.
