(TORE PAYAM, YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The youth of Angeibi Boma in Tore Payam have restored access along the vital Yei-Maridi road after clearing fallen trees that had blocked the route and stranded Motorists for several days.
The blockage disrupted transport between Yei and Maridi, leaving traders unable to move goods and threatening the livelihoods of vendors who depend on the road to access local markets.
Residents say community youth mobilized over the weekend with axes, pangas and hand saws to remove the large trees and reopen the road without waiting for external assistance.
Mr. Emmanuel Mambo, a resident of Angeibi Boma, said the roadblock created major economic challenges, with perishable goods at risk of spoiling and travelers unable to continue their journeys.
One of the youth leaders involved in the exercise said the community could not sit back while people suffered.
“This road is our lifeline. If it dies, our community suffers. We had to act and help our people,” he said.
Mary Usuwa, a vegetable vendor travelling between Maridi and Yei, said she spent two nights stranded and feared losing her produce. She praised the youth for their efforts, saying their intervention helped save her business and support her family.
Local authorities in Tore Payam commended the youth for their initiative and civic responsibility, noting that their swift action helped prevent potential food shortages in local markets.
Community members are now calling on the Central Equatoria State Government to rehabilitate the Yei-Maridi road to improve transport and ensure reliable movement of people and goods throughout the year.
