Yei County Starts Wuluturu Bridge Rehabilitation/COUNTY PRESS
(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Authorities in Yei River County have officially launched the rehabilitation of Wuluturu Bridge, a key transport link connecting Yei town to nearby payams and rural communities, in a move aimed at improving access, trade, and service delivery.
The rehabilitation project was launched on Monday following earlier delays. County officials said the works had initially been planned for completion before September 2025 but were postponed after the county prioritised rehabilitation of Kanjoro Bridge. Limited budget resources meant the two bridges could not be worked on at the same time.
The launch ceremony brought together the Commissioner of Yei River County, Emmanuel Taban Seme, the Executive Director, security officials, payam administrators, the county inspector of roads and bridges, traditional leaders, elders, community members, media representatives, and workers from the county housing and infrastructure department. Officials said the technical teams are ready to begin work immediately.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner Seme said the start of works on Wuluturu Bridge fulfils a commitment he made earlier to residents to rehabilitate both Kanjoro and Wuluturu bridges. He said the county had to sequence the projects carefully due to limited financial resources.
The commissioner said revenue collected from local markets is being reinvested into community services, including infrastructure. He said the rehabilitation of Wuluturu Bridge will improve the movement of people and goods, increase access to health, education, and other social services, and prevent communities from being cut off from Yei town during the rainy season.
Seme thanked residents for their patience while the county mobilised local resources to support the project. He said the rehabilitation is expected to take about three months, provided there are no major challenges during construction.
The Executive Director of Yei River County, Hillary John Konga, called on engineers and contractors to complete the work within the planned timeframe. He said the bridge is critical for public safety and for the daily economic activities of residents who depend on the road.
Konga said it is the responsibility of local government to provide essential services using locally generated revenue. He also urged the national government to continue supporting counties so they can deliver services more effectively to communities.
The Director of Roads and Physical Infrastructure in Yei River County, Richard Lugala Godo, described Wuluturu Bridge as an important asset for the county’s economic development. He said the bridge links Yei town to surrounding rural areas and payams, including Otogo, and connects routes leading towards the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, supporting trade and cross border movement.
Community leaders also welcomed the project. Justin Dicko, the head chief of Ronyi Boma, praised the county leadership for prioritising infrastructure development and said the rehabilitation reflects responsive local governance.
Elder Sanya James said the improved bridge is expected to enhance security and support local trade by ensuring reliable access throughout the year, especially during the rainy season when movement is often disrupted.
