(MOROBO COUNTY, CES) – A civil society activist in Morobo County has called on the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Education and the county government to urgently construct permanent classrooms at Rodoba Primary School, where poor infrastructure and flooding are disrupting learning.
Moses Manase, head of the Morobo County Civil Society Network, told Access Radio on Friday evening that the community school lacks adequate classrooms to accommodate and shelter pupils, including children who have returned from neighbouring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Heavy rainfall and seasonal flooding on Thursday worsened conditions at the school, leaving learners attending classes in a flooded temporary classroom.
Rodoba Primary School, located in Bazi (Saba), KiliKili Boma of Gulumbi Payam, is the only public primary school in the boma.
Manase appealed to both county and state authorities to mobilize available resources to replace the temporary structures with permanent classrooms, saying improved facilities could encourage more children to enroll and help tackle illiteracy.
“To our leaders both locally and those at the national level, education is something we really need to prioritize. Resources have been allocated to sectors without impact, and we have local resources but it goes to the hands of some individuals, and we need to channel resources into education development programmes because when education is prioritized, the society will develop,” Manase said.
Local education officials say many existing school structures across Morobo County remain under-resourced, dilapidated or physically damaged, leaving pupils to study under difficult conditions.
Access Radio’s attempts to obtain comments from Morobo County education officials and the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Education were unsuccessful.
