Yei Activist Urges NEC to Establish County Offices, Begin Voter Education

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A civil society leader in Yei River County is calling on the National Elections Commission, NEC to establish county level coordination offices and roll out civic and voter education programs at the local level as South Sudan prepares for the December 2026 General Elections.

Speaking to Access Radio, Yei Civil Society Forum leader Modi Arkangelo expressed concern that some political party members have already begun online campaigns for national and state parliamentary and executive positions despite the absence of NEC offices and election guidelines at the county level.

Arkangelo appealed to the NEC leadership to complete the establishment of county structures and deploy election personnel to local offices.

“Things are not in order, where are the offices of the electoral commission at the county level? Do we have these offices on the county level? NEC should do something if they said there is election because up to now, we don’t have these offices in the county and there are people keep asking questions about elections but as civil society we don’t have clear answers because we don’t have NEC staff and office in the county,” he said.

According to Arkangelo, while political leaders continue to discuss the upcoming elections, many people at the grassroots remain unaware of key electoral processes, including voter registration and civic education.

“People heard about elections but they are not aware whether there will be election, there is no electoral calendar which talks about registration and series of other activities in the election process and currently people are having dilemma and what people know is that there will be elections on the 22nd of December 2026 and at the moment NEC is not there to inform the people,” he added.

Access Radio was unable to reach NEC officials in Juba for comment by the time of publication.
