(JUBA) – The Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Gabriel Bol Deng, has urged journalists to uphold accuracy, impartiality and fairness when reporting on South Sudan’s forthcoming elections.
Speaking at the opening of an election reporting workshop organized by the Union of Journalists of South Sudan, UJOSS, with support from the National Elections Commission on Thursday, Deng called on journalists to verify information and help counter misinformation and disinformation.
He also cautioned the media against amplifying hate speech or content that could incite violence during the electoral process.
Deng encouraged journalists to promote inclusive election coverage by giving greater space to the voices of women and young people and reaching communities through local-language media.
The NEC Chairperson reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to providing timely and accurate electoral information while respecting media independence.
