National Cabinet Approves Key Constitutional Amendment for December 2026 Elections

(JUBA) – South Sudan’s Council of Ministers has approved a constitutional amendment bill aimed at paving the way for the country’s long-awaited general elections scheduled for December 2026.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit chaired the Cabinet’s Regular Meeting No. 12/2026 on Friday, where ministers endorsed the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan (Amendment No. 13) Bill, 2026, described as a major legal reform to facilitate the electoral process.

According to the Office of the President, the Council also confirmed and adopted resolutions from its previous meeting held on 24 July 2026 before deliberating on several ministerial memoranda.

Presenting the memorandum, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Dr. Wek Mamer Kuol, requested Cabinet approval of the constitutional amendment following the invocation of Article 8.4 of the Revitalised Peace Agreement, which provides for legislative action to support the conduct of elections.

Cabinet noted that the approval removes a significant legal obstacle and establishes the constitutional framework necessary for the country to proceed with the planned December 2026 polls.

The development marks an important step in South Sudan’s electoral preparations as the government intensifies efforts to implement key provisions of the peace agreement ahead of the elections.

The constitutional amendment bill is expected to be forwarded for further legislative consideration in line with the country’s legal procedures.
