(JUBA) – Leaders from South Sudan’s political parties have confirmed that the country’s transitional period will not be extended and that national general elections will take place on 22nd December 2026.
The announcement came after an expanded meeting of the Presidency, attended by representatives of parties to the Revitalised Peace Agreement. The Communique was read by the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Africano Mande Gedima.
At the meeting, political leaders agreed to form a committee tasked with resolving outstanding issues within the peace agreement, focusing on matters that are critical to the election process.
This committee will oversee necessary changes to the key provisions of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCISS) and the transitional constitution before the 2026 elections.
A second committee will work to draft the required amendments and present them to the leadership of the various signatories to ensure smooth electoral preparations.
The parties emphasised dialogue as the primary method for addressing election-related grievances, aiming to maintain political stability ahead of the elections.
The meeting also called for the immediate completion of all transitional security arrangements under Chapter Two of the peace agreement. Officials said these measures are essential for a peaceful electoral process.
Participants noted that some issues, such as the process of establishing a permanent constitution and conducting a national population census, will be addressed after the elections.
To support timely preparations, the Finance and Planning Minister was tasked with allocating and disbursing the necessary funds for all election related activities. At current exchange rates, the government will manage both South Sudanese Pounds (SSP) and US Dollars for funding, with $1 equal to 7,100 SSP.
Political leaders stressed their commitment to guiding South Sudan towards its first national elections since independence, expressing unity in their resolve to complete the transitional period as planned.
