(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit held a meeting on Wednesday with leaders of political parties to agree on the remaining steps of the transitional period and prepare the country for elections planned for December 2026.
The meeting followed the timelines set out in the peace Roadmap and was seen as an important step in creating a clear and united position as the end of the transition approaches.
SPLM Secretary General Dr Akol Paul Kordit said the parties had reached a common understanding on amending key parts of the Revitalised Agreement.
According to him, the amendments are aimed at removing the remaining difficulties that may delay progress and at guiding the country more smoothly toward next year’s elections.
Dr Akol said the leaders had also agreed to delay several tasks that remain incomplete. These include the permanent constitution process and the national population census. Both activities will now be handled after the elections, when the political space is expected to be more stable and organised.
The political parties further agreed to form a committee made up of representatives from the various parties to discuss outstanding issues. They also endorsed the creation of a legal committee, to be chaired by the Minister of Justice, which will look at the legislative changes required to support the agreed amendments.
Officials who attended the meeting said the discussions showed a renewed commitment among political leaders to secure a peaceful and organised transfer of power.
They added that the shared effort is expected to support wider goals of stability, improved governance and national unity as South Sudan moves closer to its planned elections.
