(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit held talks with the Ethiopian Special Envoy and Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide Mohammed, on Tuesday to explore ways to strengthen economic cooperation between South Sudan and Ethiopia.
During the meeting, Minister Shide conveyed a message from Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, reaffirming Addis Ababa’s commitment to advancing a comprehensive partnership with Juba.
The discussions focused on joint economic initiatives and infrastructure investments, including the development of road networks, electricity transmission lines and telecommunications.
According to the Presidential Press Unit, Both leaders expressed strong commitment to deepening economic ties for the benefit of their citizens.
The talks also covered potential collaboration between the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and South Sudanese financial institutions aimed at supporting the growth and stability of the banking sector.
Air transport was highlighted as a key area for partnership, with Ethiopian Airlines proposed as a strategic partner to improve South Sudan’s aviation services.
The leaders also examined plans to develop a trade and transport corridor connecting South Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti, intended to facilitate regional commerce and logistics.
The South Sudanese government described the visit by the Ethiopian officials as an important milestone in the ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
