Nimule Revenue Collection Under Review

(NIMULE, SOUTH SUDAN) – The Eastern Equatoria State Economic Reforms Committee has arrived in Nimule to oversee the implementation of revenue collection in line with resolutions of the State and National Governments by a high level ministerial committee on economic reform.

The committee is led by the State Advisor on Economic Affairs, Hon. German Charles Ojok, who also serves as the chairperson of the committee.

Speaking during a briefing meeting upon the committee’s arrival on Tuesday, Hon. Ojok said the committee has a two fold mission: to ensure the proper implementation of revenue collection at all levels of government and to engage stakeholders on development strategies for Nimule Municipal Council.

“Our first mission is to implement the constitutional provision on revenue collection rights for every level of government. It was already agreed that what is supposed to be collected by the municipality should entirely be collected by the municipality, what is for the State should be collected by the State, and what is for the National Government should be collected by the National Government, because we have one government,” Hon. Ojok said.

“Our second mission is about the development of Nimule. There has been concern that although revenue is collected from Nimule, the town does not reflect that development. We want Nimule to develop. We have come to share ideas with the leadership, starting with the Mayor and community leaders, including youth and women, on how we can collectively develop Nimule,” he added.

According to Hon. Ojok, the committee will assess existing challenges affecting the growth and development of Nimule and propose practical solutions.

The delegation includes Hon. Peter Lokeng Lotone, Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement and Deputy Chairperson of the committee; Hon. Ruth Marious Buga, Minister of Trade and Industry and a member of the committee; and Mr. Geoffrey Otto, Secretary of the committee.

The Mayor of Nimule Municipal Council, H. W. Caesar Longa Fuli, welcomed the committee and assured it of the council’s full cooperation. He, however, cited the ongoing dry spell as one of the main challenges affecting the town.

The committee is expected to conclude its three day mission with a set of resolutions aimed at harmonising revenue collection and accelerating development in Nimule.

The visit follows earlier high level ministerial committee on economic reform discussions on economic reforms and revenue administration in Nimule, including recommendations concerning the reopening of state revenue offices that had been closed in 2024. The committee is expected to engage relevant authorities and stakeholders on the implementation of these reforms during its mission.
