U.S. Reaffirms Support for South Sudan’s Sovereign Election Decisions

(JUBA) – The United States has reiterated that the decision on whether and when to hold elections in South Sudan remains a sovereign matter for the South Sudanese people and their leaders, while calling for peaceful conditions and responsible use of national resources if the country proceeds with the polls.

In a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Juba, Washington clarified its position following recent comments by members of South Sudan’s Transitional Government regarding U.S. policy on elections.

“The United States does not seek to impose a political or ideological model on South Sudan,” the statement said, emphasising that the timing and scope of elections are decisions for South Sudanese citizens and leaders to make.

However, the U.S. noted that should South Sudan move forward with elections, national leaders must ensure a peaceful environment for the process and finance it using the country’s own public resources.

The statement further explained that the U.S. position is consistent with its broader policy priorities in South Sudan, which were reaffirmed by the U.S. Department of State in February. These priorities include promoting peace and ending the misuse of public revenue.

According to the statement, public funds should be directed towards appropriate public needs and services that benefit the South Sudanese people.

The U.S. has consistently maintained that lasting peace, accountability, and responsible governance are essential foundations for South Sudan’s stability and development as the country continues its transition towards democratic governance.

The latest remarks come as South Sudan prepares for a crucial political period, with ongoing discussions around the country’s transition process and the future conduct of national elections.
