(Addis Ababa) – More than 200 South Sudanese students graduated on June 21, 2025, from universities across Ethiopia, marking a day of pride and celebration for families, communities, and the South Sudanese diaspora.
The ceremonies took place at several leading Ethiopian institutions, with students earning degrees in a wide range of disciplines including diplomacy, engineering, pharmacy, economics, and tourism. Many graduates were recognized not only for academic excellence but also for their contributions to student leadership and cross-border cooperation.
Fifteen students graduated from the Ethiopian Civil Service University in Addis Ababa, including Ambassador Kun Puok Reik, who completed a master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Relations. His achievement was celebrated as an example of academic leadership and public service potential.
At Jimma University, 55 South Sudanese students were awarded degrees. Among them were Wal Mawien Anei, an economics graduate, and Abraham Mawut, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. Both were praised for their academic efforts and potential impact on South Sudan’s development.
Bahir Dar University also hosted a graduation ceremony, which included former student leader Amet Lual Mabil, who earned a BSc in Engineering. He and his colleague, Engineer James Ajith, were commended for their collaborative achievements and for representing South Sudan with distinction.
Later in the day, Arba Minch University celebrated the graduation of 45 South Sudanese students. Among them was Viola Atou, a young woman passionate about developing South Sudan’s tourism sector. Other institutions such as Addis Ababa University and Debre Markos University also held graduation ceremonies featuring South Sudanese students.
Graduates were urged to consider returning to South Sudan and applying their new knowledge and skills to help rebuild and improve the country. Ethiopia, often referred to as the “Mother of Africans,” has hosted and supported South Sudanese students for decades, offering opportunities for education, peace, and partnership since the 1960s.
