President Kiir, Ramaphosa Reaffirm Ties as South Sudan Prepares for Elections

(PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and supporting South Sudan’s transition towards democratic governance ahead of the country’s planned general elections.

The two leaders held what officials described as fruitful and productive discussions in Pretoria on Thursday, focusing on South Sudan’s peace process, election preparations, security matters, constitutional reforms and cooperation between the two nations.

During the meeting, President Kiir expressed appreciation to the Government and people of South Africa for their continued support to South Sudan’s efforts to implement the Revitalized Peace Agreement and successfully conclude the transitional period.

The discussions also underscored the importance of maintaining momentum in the peace process and advancing key reforms aimed at creating conditions for credible and peaceful elections.

President Kiir noted that South Africa has remained a longstanding partner in South Sudan’s search for peace, stability and democratic development. He commended Pretoria’s continued engagement in supporting the country’s political transition and institution-building efforts.

The meeting comes as South Sudan intensifies preparations for its anticipated general elections, widely viewed as a critical step towards consolidating peace and democratic governance following years of conflict and transition.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation and stronger bilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of regional stability, peacebuilding and mutual development.
