(JUBA) — The African Union has reaffirmed its strong support for South Sudan’s preparations for the December 2026 elections, continued inter-party dialogue, and adherence to judicial processes, following high-level talks in Juba.
The meeting brought together President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, Jakaya Kikwete. Discussions focused on aligning political, legal and transitional priorities as the country moves toward its first post-conflict elections.
The AU described the upcoming polls as a crucial milestone for consolidating peace and strengthening democratic institutions in South Sudan.
Speaking to the Presidential Press Unit on Thursday after the meeting, Kikwete who is also the former President of Tanzania said the visit marked an important opportunity to engage broadly with stakeholders.
“This is the first time I am talking to all the stakeholders, getting briefings about the situation in the country, and advice on key issues and needs,” he said.
Both sides emphasized the importance of sustained inter-party dialogue to foster consensus and ensure a peaceful electoral environment. The AU also underscored the need for South Sudan to follow through on its judicial processes to uphold the rule of law and institutional integrity.
In addition, the AU expressed support for amendments made under Article 8.4 of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, recognizing them as legitimate within the agreement’s framework.
With limited time remaining before the elections, officials agreed on sequencing key reforms. Some provisions including the constitutional review process, national population census and aspects of security sector reform are expected to be implemented after the elections.
The meeting builds on previous engagements, including the C5 and Pretoria talks, which have contributed to a more unified approach between the AU and South Sudanese authorities.
Kikwete said outcomes from these discussions will be presented to the African Union as part of ongoing efforts to support the country’s transition.
Reaffirming continental backing, he stressed the AU’s commitment to supporting peace, stability, and credible elections in South Sudan. He also made clear that the transitional timeline will not be extended.
“There will be no extension,” Kikwete stated, describing President Kiir’s assurance as “important news for both the region and the international community.”
