Yei Residents Welcome New Police Chief, Call for Stronger Rule of Law and Civilian Protection

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Residents of Yei Town have welcomed the appointment of General Yoasa Lujang Kamba as the new Inspector of Police for Yei River County, expressing hope that his leadership will strengthen civilian protection, uphold the rule of law and improve relations between the police and the community.

The South Sudan National Police Service recently deployed General Lujang to take charge of policing operations in the county.

Speaking to Access Radio, several residents outlined their expectations for the new police chief, including improved public security, protection of human rights and a more visible police presence in addressing crime.

Alison Duku said the new police leadership should prioritise the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of movement, speech and association.

“We expect him to improve the rule of law, protect civilian rights, including freedom of association, speech and movement, and ensure the safety of people and their property in both urban and rural areas of Yei River County,” Duku said.

Stella Amude, a resident of Hai Peace, urged General Lujang to take decisive action against criminal gangs that have reportedly contributed to insecurity in parts of the town.

“Over the past several months, we have seen increasing gang-related crimes in Yei, and there has been little action to prevent them. We want the new police chief to address these issues without delay,” she said.

Another resident, Ronald Hakim of Sobe area, called on the new police leadership to strengthen cooperation between law enforcement and local communities as a means of improving public order and reducing crime.

“We want a police leader who engages with the public through local media, listens to community concerns and responds promptly to criminal activities. We also expect him to promote positive relations between the police and residents,” Hakim stated.

A resident identified only as Moses appealed for reforms aimed at improving the effectiveness of the police service and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.

“We are not seeing the police playing their full role in the town. Many criminal cases are handled by the army, while the police are less visible in resolving everyday civil crimes. Our message to General Lujang is to strengthen and reform the police service in Yei River County,” he said.

The residents expressed optimism that the arrival of the new police chief could mark a turning point in efforts to improve security, uphold justice and enhance trust between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

General Yoasa Lujang Kamba assumes office at a time when local authorities and residents continue to call for stronger security measures to support peace, stability and socio-economic recovery across Yei River County.
