(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Farmers in Yei River County have been urged to begin preparing their land for dry season planting as the second cultivation period comes to an end.
Local agriculture officials say early work will help secure food supplies and support household incomes during the coming months.
Asiki Isaac, the Director of Agriculture for Yei River County, called on farmers to take advantage of the short window between the main farming seasons.
He said early preparation is essential, especially around water sources such as streams and swampy areas:
“Farmers should begin clearing bushes near water sources to ready the land for planting green vegetables.”
Isaac explained that vegetables grown during the dry season help families reduce food shortages when rainfall is limited.
He also said dry season farming offers an important economic boost to rural households:
“Farmers in greater Yei should prioritise agricultural activities within the off season in order to make lives easier.”
Yei River County is often described as South Sudan’s food basket because of its reliable rainfall, fertile soils and favourable climate. The area supports two planting seasons every year and produces a wide range of food crops and cash crops.
