(YEI RIVER COUNTY)-The Director General for Horticulture in the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Agriculture and Technical Advisor to the Yei County Agriculture Department (CAD), Edimon Taban Gogo, has appealed to farmers in Greater Yei to prepare their land early for the first planting season.
Speaking in an interview with Access Radio in Yei Town on Tuesday, Edimon advised farmers that the period from January to March should be used for land preparation ahead of the planting season.
“My advice as a technical advisor for the County Agriculture Department is that from January, February, and March farmers should focus on land preparation. By March, planting should begin,” he said.
He explained that areas from Kajo-Keji County to Tombura County fall within the Green Belt, which experiences two main agricultural seasons each year.
“The first season begins in January and ends in April. This is the first planting season mainly for legumes and cereals,” Edimon added.
According to him, legumes can be planted in March, while cereals can be planted from March to April.
He further noted that May marks the beginning of another crop season, particularly for coffee.
“Planting of coffee begins from May, June, and July. This period is suitable for horticultural crops such as coffee, mangoes, and other related crops,” he stressed.
Edimon encouraged farmers to follow the recommended agricultural calendar in order to increase productivity and improve food security in the region.
