President Kiir Set to Establish ICT Regulatory Authority for Internet Providers

(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit is set to establish a new Information and Communication Technology Authority to regulate internet service providers and strengthen South Sudan’s digital sector.

The announcement follows a briefing by the Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Ateny Wek Ateny, who updated the President on the ministry’s progress and future plans.

According to the minister, the proposed ICT Authority will operate under the Ministry of Information and will oversee internet service providers across the country. The authority is expected to improve internet governance, modernize digital infrastructure, and enhance the delivery of ICT services nationwide.

Ateny said the initiative will also create employment opportunities for young people by promoting innovation and expanding the technology sector. He added that the authority will serve as a regulatory body while the government awaits the passage of relevant legislation through Parliament.

The minister further briefed President Kiir on South Sudan’s participation in regional and international technology conferences aimed at aligning the country’s ICT sector with global standards.

The meeting also reviewed the ministry’s preparations for the upcoming elections, with officials saying a communication strategy is in place to support journalists and ensure the public receives timely and accurate information throughout the electoral process.
