Yei Youth Urged to Turn Rainy Season into Wealth Through Farming

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Young people in Yei River County have been encouraged to take advantage of the ongoing heavy rains by engaging in agriculture as a way to combat poverty, unemployment and food insecurity.

Prominent young businessman and farmer Kissenga Henry is leading by example, along with his family, by preparing sweet potato fields in anticipation of the dry season harvest. He says farming offers a practical opportunity for income generation and self-reliance.

Henry urged youth to utilise the fertile land and abundant rainfall available in Yei to grow cash crops for both sale and household consumption.

“Let us use our skills, pick up our hoes and engage in farming. God has blessed us with fertile land and rain. Through production, we can create opportunities and improve our livelihoods,” he said.

He further advised young people not to depend entirely on searching for formal jobs but instead to invest their energy and talents in agriculture and other productive ventures.

Meanwhile, the Director of Agriculture in Yei River County, Isaac Asiki Joseph, commended innovative farmers and youth who are embracing crop production. He noted that the current rainy season presents an opportunity for farmers to increase sweet potato production and earn higher incomes during the dry season.

Joseph also highlighted the impact of changing weather patterns, saying farmers should make the most of the current rains to strengthen food security and improve household incomes.

Yei River County, located in South Sudan’s fertile Green Belt region, is widely regarded as one of the country’s food baskets due to its rich soils and favourable climate for agriculture.
