(JUBA) – The Angebi community has reaffirmed its commitment to improving education through a community-driven initiative to renovate Angebi Primary School, as local leaders engaged the Central Equatoria State Ministry of General Education and Instruction on the progress of the project and the challenges facing learners in the area.
A delegation from Angebi Boma, led by Community Chairperson Sallah Aggrey Mandi, paid a courtesy visit to the State Minister of General Education and Instruction, Hon. Lupai Satimon Andrew, on Friday to brief the ministry on the ongoing rehabilitation of Angebi Primary School in Tore Payam, Yei River County.
The delegation, which included David Nasir, Baibai Joseph Dusman, and Karaba Bullen, informed the minister that the school renovation is a fully community-led initiative aimed at restoring educational infrastructure damaged during years of conflict.
According to the community leaders, resource mobilisation for the project began in 2024, reflecting the determination of residents to rebuild the school and improve learning conditions for children. Renovation works officially started in June 2026 and are expected to be completed next month.
Angebi Primary School serves not only children from Angebi Boma but also learners from neighbouring communities. The school was among several public institutions that were vandalised and severely damaged during the civil war, leaving generations of children without adequate learning facilities.
While updating the ministry on the progress achieved, the delegation also raised concerns about persistent challenges affecting education in Angebi. These include a shortage of qualified teachers and a lack of essential learning and teaching materials, particularly stationery.
The community appealed to the State Government and education stakeholders to provide support in addressing these gaps to ensure that children can fully benefit from the newly renovated school.
In response, Hon. Lupai Satimon Andrew commended the people of Angebi for taking ownership of their development and investing in the future of their children through education.
The minister described the initiative as a commendable example of community participation and assured the delegation of the State Government’s willingness to support efforts aimed at improving access to quality education.
Speaking after the meeting, Chairperson Sallah Aggrey Mandi reiterated the community’s openness to collaboration with development partners, non-governmental organisations, government institutions, private companies and well-wishers who share the vision of strengthening education in Angebi.
“We are ready to welcome any partner, government institutions, NGOs, reputable companies, and well-wishers who come with good faith and a genuine interest in supporting the education of our children,” he said.
Community members believe the restoration of Angebi Primary School demonstrates the power of collective action and highlights what can be achieved when communities unite around a common goal.
As construction nears completion, residents hope the project will mark the beginning of a new chapter for education in Angebi and inspire similar community-led initiatives across Yei River County.
