AMDISS-Press Release
(JUBA)-The Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) has welcomed the appointment of a new Board of Directors and Managing Director of the national Media Authority, expressing optimism about the future of the country’s media sector.
In a press statement issued on Monday, AMDISS congratulated the newly appointed leadership, wishing them success as they take on the responsibility of guiding and regulating South Sudan’s media landscape. The organization noted that the inclusion of seasoned media professionals on the Board presents an opportunity to strengthen collaboration among regulators, journalists, media houses and civil society.
AMDISS particularly highlighted the presence of experienced figures such as former Chairperson Mr. Koang Pal Chang, whose expertise is expected to contribute to informed decision-making within the Authority.
Despite the optimism, the organisation raised concerns over persistent challenges affecting media operations across the country. It pointed out that many community radio stations continue to struggle with high operational licensing fees, which have become increasingly difficult to sustain in the current economic environment.
The association also underscored the pressures faced by journalists, warning that such conditions could undermine their ability to report freely and independently. AMDISS further stressed the urgent need for expanded professional training opportunities, suggesting that reopening the Media Development Institute (MDI) would significantly strengthen capacity building within the sector.
As part of its recommendations, AMDISS called on the new Media Authority leadership to prioritise reforms that will enhance the sustainability and independence of the media. These include reviewing the current licensing fee structure to make it more affordable for community media, creating regular dialogue platforms between key stakeholders, and reinforcing protections for editorial independence and journalists’ rights.
The organization also appealed for closer collaboration with stakeholders, including AMDISS itself, to support the reopening of the Media Development Institute and other initiatives aimed at improving media professionalism in the country.
AMDISS reiterated its commitment to working with the new leadership and relevant partners to promote a vibrant, accountable, and independent media environment. It emphasised that a strong media sector is essential for informed public participation, transparency, and national development in South Sudan.
