(JUBA) – The Media Authority has begun a two day training programme in Juba aimed at improving the capacity of judicial officers and media actors to respond to hate speech and misinformation.
The event held at Juba Grand Hotel with support from Journalists for Human Rights brought together officials and practitioners to discuss how to manage the spread of harmful content while protecting freedom of expression.
The discussions focused on how South Sudan can develop fair ways of handling misinformation, protect the right to speak freely and improve understanding of cybersecurity risks.
Participants also examined how online behaviour can affect peace and stability, especially in a country where social tensions are often high.
The Minister of ICT and Postal Services, Ateny Wek Ateny, told the gathering that digital communication is expanding quickly in South Sudan.
He said social media has made it easier for people to share information but has also increased the speed at which hate speech, misinformation and deliberate falsehoods spread.
According to the Minister, these behaviours can raise tensions, encourage conflict, mislead the public and weaken trust in national institutions.
He said that because the country remains fragile, it is important to strengthen the ability of the judiciary to deal with online harms in a fair way that helps protect social stability.
The Managing Director of the Media Authority said the institution remains committed to creating a safer information environment.
He called for better support for the judiciary, media workers and law enforcement officers, saying they need the right skills to respond to online threats while still defending freedom of expression and encouraging responsible journalism.
