Two Humanitarian Workers Abducted Along Yei-Kaya Road

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Concern is growing in Yei River County after two humanitarian workers were abducted by unknown armed men while travelling to Morobo County for official humanitarian duties.

The two staff members, who work for a National NGO operating in Yei, were reportedly ambushed at gunpoint on Wednesday morning in Alero Village, about seven miles along the Yei-Kaya Road.

According to local sources, the aid workers were forced into nearby bushes by their captors after their vehicle was stopped. Sources further claim that the abductors later demanded an unspecified amount of money in United States dollars as ransom for their release.

Speaking to Access Radio on condition of anonymity on Thursday, a close family member of one of the abducted workers said the whereabouts and condition of the victims remain unknown.

“He left yesterday and told us that he was travelling for a field mission to Morobo County. We later received information that they had been ambushed and abducted by unknown armed men. As a family, we appeal to the abductors to release them because they are humanitarian workers serving communities in need.”

Efforts by Access Radio to obtain a comment from Yei Police authorities were unsuccessful by press time.

This latest incident comes only weeks after two humanitarian workers from Mugwo Development Organization were abducted at the same location before later being released.

County authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the latest abduction.

The Yei-Kaya Road, particularly the stretch between Yei and Morobo counties, has witnessed a growing number of security incidents in recent months, raising concerns among residents, travellers, and humanitarian organisations operating in the area.
