(MOROBO COUNTY) – Police authorities in Morobo County have begun a crackdown on motorcycles operating without legal documents, in a move aimed at enforcing a recent county government order regulating boda-boda operations.
Speaking to Iyete FM on Tuesday, Traffic Police Officer First Lieutenant Moro Lasu Abdallah said the exercise is intended to ensure compliance with the county directive and improve the regulation of motorcycle transport services.
The operation, which started on Monday, follows a local order issued last month by the Morobo County Government dissolving unlicensed boda-boda associations and banning riders operating without proper registration.
“We are implementing the order issued by the county government to ensure that all riders operate legally and possess the required documents,” Lasu said.
According to the traffic officer, dozens of motorcycles have already been impounded during the operation after their owners failed to present essential documents, including logbooks, riding permits, registration stickers and valid purchase receipts.
Lasu noted that the crackdown is also part of wider efforts to curb cross-border motorcycle theft and illegal trafficking of motorcycles between South Sudan, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The operation will help prevent motorcycles stolen from neighbouring countries from entering South Sudan, and likewise stop stolen motorcycles from being taken across the border,” he explained.
Authorities have urged all boda-boda riders in the county to obtain the necessary documentation and comply with transport regulations to avoid penalties and seizure of their motorcycles.
Efforts to obtain a response from the newly established county boda-boda association were unsuccessful by the time of publication.
The crackdown comes as local authorities seek to strengthen road safety, improve accountability within the transport sector and address security concerns linked to undocumented motorcycle operations in border areas.
