(RUMBEK) – A deadly confrontation in Pachong Payam, Rumbek East County, Lakes State, left one suspected cattle thief dead and five soldiers injured after an exchange of gunfire between local youth and security forces on Saturday. The violence followed a report of stolen livestock, escalating into a broader clash marked by misinformation and community retaliation.
According to Lakes State’s Acting Minister of Information and Communication, William Koji Kerjok, the initial incident began after criminals allegedly stole three herds of cattle. The cattle owner reported the theft at the Panakwach police base, prompting an organised force to pursue the suspects.
During the pursuit, one of the suspects reportedly opened fire on the security team. In response, the soldiers returned fire, resulting in the suspect’s death and the arrest of another individual, who is currently in police custody in Rumbek.
“When the forces pursued the suspects, they resisted and opened fire. One suspect was killed during the exchange, and another captured,” Koji explained.
However, misinformation quickly spread in the community that the suspect had been executed in his home, rather than killed in a shootout. This rumour reportedly fuelled an angry and violent reaction from local youth, who attacked a military base in Pachong, a unit not directly involved in the initial operation.
The attack led to injuries among five soldiers, prompting authorities to deploy reinforcements. Koji said the military exercised restraint during the incident, mindful of the fact that they live among civilians in the area.
“The army acted with caution to avoid harming civilians. Additional forces have now been deployed, and the situation is under control,” he added.
The government spokesperson insisted that the deceased was involved in cattle theft and that the security response followed legal and operational procedures.
Meanwhile, civil society leader Angelina Adhel Malual condemned the violence and criticised the government’s response. She warned that incidents like this, especially when driven by rumours, could reopen historical wounds in areas like Pachong, which have long struggled with communal conflict.
“This incident reflects a breakdown in law and order. The government must provide clear instructions to its security forces,” she said.
Malual called for patience from both the local population and the armed forces, urging them to respect legal frameworks and avoid confrontations that could destabilise the region further.
“These soldiers are here to protect, not fight with, civilians. We cannot allow Pachong to return to its violent past. It has enjoyed years of peace and that must be protected,” she added.
She urged the Lakes State government to take immediate steps to calm tensions and prevent any further escalation, especially given the area’s fragile stability.
