(JUBA) – Retired Major General (Police) Elia Wai Wai, a former commissioner of Yei River County in Central Equatoria State, has died at a medical facility in Juba. Family members confirmed the news to Access Radio on Monday night.
He served as commissioner between 2011 and 2012 during the early years of South Sudan’s independence. During his time in office, he focused on improving local infrastructure and encouraging farming as a main source of income for residents.
He was known for advocating the repair of the Yei to Morobo road, which he believed would help connect farmers to larger markets and allow them to sell their crops more easily. He also urged the people of Yei River County to increase food production to sustain local families and reduce dependence on outside aid.
In July 2011, ahead of independence celebrations, he toured all five payams of the county to meet local communities and promote unity. He later introduced an alternative education programme aimed at helping those who had missed regular schooling.
He worked closely with both local and foreign organisations and held discussions with the United States Agency for International Development to seek support for infrastructure projects in the county.
Relatives and residents in Yei say he will be remembered for his efforts to promote farming, education and development during a critical period in South Sudan’s history.
