(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Lainya County, Robert Lasu John Morris, has attended the official handover ceremony of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan base in Yei, an event that marks the end of UNMISS field operations in the Greater Yei counties.
The ceremony took place on 19 December 2025 in Yei town, where the mission formally transferred its base as it shifts operations to its headquarters in Juba.
The event brought together senior government officials from across Central Equatoria State. Among those present were the State Minister for Peace Building, representing the Governor, as well as the Commissioners of Yei River, Morobo and Kajo Keji counties. Members of the security forces and other stakeholders also attended, reflecting the regional importance of the transition.
Speaking during the ceremony, Commissioner Morris highlighted the role UNMISS has played in supporting peace and stability in the area over the years. “Today, we acknowledge the efforts and sacrifices made by UNMISS in fostering peace and security in our communities,” he said. He added that cooperation between the mission and local authorities had helped strengthen trust and calm during difficult periods.
Commissioner Morris said that although UNMISS is closing its base in Yei, the work done by the mission would continue to guide local efforts. “As UNMISS moves its operations to Juba, we remain committed to building on the foundation they have laid,” he said. He stressed that counties in Greater Yei, including Lainya, are ready to take on greater responsibility in governance and security.
The ceremony also underscored a broader shift in South Sudan, where international missions are reducing their physical presence while encouraging stronger local leadership. Officials at the event noted that cooperation among neighbouring counties will be essential to maintain peace and address shared challenges.
Commissioner Morris stressed that his administration would continue to work closely with state authorities, security organs and community leaders. “Our commitment is to ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for our people,” he said.
While UNMISS will no longer operate a base in Yei, the mission has indicated that support to the area will continue from Juba. Local leaders said the transition places greater responsibility on county administrations but also reflects progress made in stability across Greater Yei.
