(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Youth groups in Yei are stepping up awareness efforts on sexual and gender based violence through community radio programmes aimed at prevention and support for survivors.
The Yei River County Youth Association took part in a radio talk show on Radio Spirit 99.9 FM on Friday, focusing on the causes, forms and impact of sexual and gender based violence across communities in the area.
The programme was supported by a local organisation RECONCILE, working on peace and reconciliation.
Speakers discussed how such violence affects individuals, families and wider society and outlined practical steps to reduce cases in Yei.
The discussion emphasised the need for early reporting, community vigilance and stronger cooperation between residents and authorities.
Participants included representatives from youth groups, legal services, women’s organisations and community policing structures.
They highlighted the role of young people in raising awareness and preventing abuse, as well as the importance of legal protection and access to support services for survivors.
Community policing representatives stressed the role of local committees and residents in identifying risks and preventing incidents, while legal experts explained available justice mechanisms for victims seeking redress.
Women leaders also underlined the need for stronger involvement of women’s groups in promoting peace and addressing violence at the community level.
Organisers said the radio programme aimed to reach a wide audience across Yei and encourage open discussion of an issue that is often under reported.
They added that continued engagement through media and community platforms is essential to building safer communities.
