(JUBA / MOSCOW) – The government of South Sudan is strengthening economic ties with Moscow as new investment prospects emerge across key sectors.
The Minister of Finance and Planning, Salvatore Garang Mabior, held talks with the Russian Ambassador to South Sudan, Alexsandr V. Kosmodemiyanskiy, focusing on expanding bilateral economic cooperation between Juba and Moscow on Tuesday.
Top priorities discussed during the meeting included investment in mining, healthcare, and agriculture. Ambassador Kosmodemiyanskiy expressed Russia’s readiness to support these sectors, noting that Russian companies are prepared to begin operations in South Sudan.
The ambassador also highlighted opportunities in education, stating that Russia is open to offering scholarships for South Sudanese students to study at Russian universities, similar to programs already benefiting students from other African countries.
Both sides indicated plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would pave the way for Russian companies to formally launch operations in South Sudan. This includes proposed projects such as the construction of oil refineries, a move described as mutually beneficial for both nations.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Minister Garang said discussions also covered plans to upgrade the Bentiu oil refinery in Unity State to boost crude oil production and refine petroleum products locally. He emphasized that South Sudan’s vast natural resources present significant opportunities but require feasibility studies to attract international investment.
The meeting underscores growing diplomatic and economic engagement between South Sudan and Russia, as Juba seeks foreign partnerships to drive development and economic growth.
