(JUBA COUNTY) – The Governor of Central Equatoria State, Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, has called for stronger efforts to empower women in South Sudan’s aviation industry.
He made the remarks on Wednesday during the official opening of the 3rd Annual Conference of the South Sudan Women in Aviation Association, held in Juba under the theme “Empowering Women, Transforming Aviation.”
Governor Mujung said that involving women in aviation is not only a matter of fairness but also a practical step toward building innovation and sustainable development.
He explained that countries which have encouraged women’s participation in aviation have seen major improvements in creativity and performance:
“The participation of women in aviation has been limited by social and institutional barriers,” the Governor stated. “We must work together as government, private sector and civil society to remove these barriers and create opportunities for our daughters, sisters and mothers.”
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing gender equality in all sectors, including aviation and urged aviation authorities to establish mentorship and scholarship programmes to support young women who wish to join the industry.
The state governor also appealed to development partners and investors to assist in funding training programmes and other initiatives aimed at empowering women in the aviation field.
The conference brought together aviation professionals, government officials and women leaders from across South Sudan. Participants discussed ways to promote gender equality, address workplace challenges and increase the number of women pilots, engineers, and air traffic controllers.
Women currently make up a small percentage of the aviation workforce in South Sudan, but officials hope that the growing attention to gender inclusion will open more opportunities in the coming years.
