(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Yei River County, Emmanuel Taban Seme, has called for closer cooperation between government institutions and civil society groups to promote peace, good governance and community development across the county.
Commissioner Taban made the remarks during the opening of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) County Exchange Visit and Best Practices Forum held at the ECSS Guest House in Yei.
The three day event, which ran from 29th to 31st October 2025, brought together local government leaders, lawmakers, development agencies and civil society representatives.
The forum was supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and focused on experience sharing, identifying community challenges and finding practical ways to strengthen local development and peacebuilding efforts.
“When people come together, it means sharing experiences and challenges,” said Commissioner Taban. “Civil society organisations act as the voice of the people and are vital partners in tackling issues that affect our communities.”
The Commissioner added that genuine partnership between civil society and government can help restore trust and rebuild social structures weakened by years of conflict.
Dr Manase Gogo, one of the facilitators, said the forum aims to build bridges among civil society members and government representatives while promoting dialogue on governance and peace.
“This platform allows citizens to stay informed through churches, radio programmes, and youth networks,” he explained.
Civil society leaders in Yei also praised the government’s involvement in the discussions. Modi Archangelo, the head of the Civil Society Network in Yei River County, said the collaboration shows shared ownership of local progress.
“Building this country does not only depend on the government. It requires all of us to take part,” he said.
Slash Moses, a partners’ team leader, emphasised that empowering civil society organisations enables them to better address community problems and strengthen peace and resilience.
The IOM Project Officer for Central Equatoria State, under the consortium project covering Yei, Lainya, Morobo, and Kajo-Keji counties, said the forum offers an important opportunity for mutual learning.
“Civil society is a strong pillar that supports both government and citizens in addressing development and governance challenges,” he said.
A Member of Parliament representing Central Equatoria State commended both Yei River County authorities and civil society for organising the exchange forum.
“The government represents the people and civil society represents their voice. Working together is the only way to move our communities forward,” the lawmaker said.
