(MOROBO COUNTY) – The Executive Director of Morobo County, Gale Ebizon has called on the newly established county peace committee to draw up action plans aimed at promoting peace and reconciliation at the grassroots level across the five Payams of the county.
Speaking at the closing of a three day peace workshop on Thursday, organised by Morobo County Administration in partnership with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Gale assured the committee of the county government’s commitment, alongside development partners, to support peace building efforts.
He urged committee members to remain united and proactive in their work:
“Let us join hands in peace building. To the peace committee members, my office remains open to listen to you and support your efforts in promoting peace and reconciliation in the Payams.”
He stressed that peace is the foundation for development, food security, and investment opportunities in Morobo. He further appealed to residents and local institutions to volunteer in promoting reconciliation:
“Let us all volunteer to promote peace and work together with relevant government institutions and NGOs in advancing peace in the county.”
Charlotta Diria, Vice Chairperson of the County Peace Committee, welcomed the support received so far and expressed appreciation to both the county government and UNMISS for their role in setting up the committee and providing training.
She said the committee is ready to begin its work but appealed for sustained support from both the government and UNMISS:
“We are ready to work together and shall start promoting peace and reconciliation efforts beginning from the family level, to the community, and the county at large.”
The workshop held in Morobo town comes at a time when the county which borders Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo has been experiencing recurring insecurity and displacement in recent months.
