Local Support Grows for Warrap Disarmament/Aweil News Agency
(Kuajok) – Communities in Warrap State have declared their support for the state of emergency and disarmament process recently announced by the President of South Sudan, following a consultative meeting held within the state.
The gathering brought together community leaders and representatives from across Warrap to discuss ongoing insecurity, especially related to the widespread presence of illegal firearms. Participants concluded that disarmament, under the legal framework of the state of emergency, is necessary to restore peace and lawfulness in the state.
One of the participants, Daniel Majak, told the media that the forum gave its full endorsement to both measures. “The state of emergency is endorsed by Warrap State communities during today’s consultative meeting,” he said. “This could help to affect the unlawful individuals who resist handing over guns to the government,” Majak added.
The disarmament effort is part of a broader national push to reduce communal violence, cattle raids, and armed criminal activity in states like Warrap, where the circulation of firearms among civilians has fueled prolonged insecurity.
Government authorities have not yet disclosed the specific timelines for implementation, but community support is seen as a key step in ensuring voluntary compliance and minimizing confrontation between civilians and security forces.
The consultative meeting was organized as part of broader peacebuilding efforts in the region and aimed to ensure that local voices are considered in the rollout of national security measures. Warrap, like other parts of the country, has experienced recurring conflict that many believe can be reduced through controlled disarmament and strong local cooperation.
