(WARRAP STATE) – The Jalwau and Akook communities have pledged to hand over their firearms to the government. The commitment was made during a community dialogue held at Ngapagok Payam Headquarters, led by Ambassador Bol Wek Agoth.
A similar peace outreach was conducted with the Thiik community in Malual-Chum, where messages promoting unity and adherence to the State of Emergency directives were also shared.
The State of Emergency, declared by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has received full backing from Warrap State Governor Bol Wek Agoth. The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to implement the directive, citing it as a necessary measure to address rising insecurity and prevent recurring communal violence across the state.
Ambassador Agoth used the platform to outline his broader peacebuilding strategy, which includes reconciliation efforts between the Greater Ananatak and Greater Luacjang communities. He urged both groups to join hands in development activities, particularly in the areas of trade and agriculture, as a foundation for long term peace and prosperity.
“I want to see children back in school. I long for the day when women no longer sleep under trees, but return to the safety of their homes. Our elders deserve to live their final years in dignity,” said Governor Agoth during his remarks to the communities.
As part of the wider campaign to restore law and order, the Governor introduced a team of legal professionals who will be supporting justice initiatives at the grassroots level. This move is aimed at enhancing access to justice and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld.
Following his engagements in Jalwau, Akook, and Thiik communities, Governor Agoth proceeded to Romic in Tonj East County, where he is scheduled to deliver a major address on 2 August 2025.
He is accompanied by a high level delegation comprising H.E. Ayak Bona, Gen. Garang Mabil, Rt. Hon. Kuec Deng Mayar, State Advisors, Ministers, independent commission leaders, State Members of Parliament and senior security personnel.
The disarmament initiative comes amid ongoing concerns about localised violence in Warrap State and wider efforts by the government to strengthen peace and stability in South Sudan.
While no specific figures were provided, the voluntary surrender of weapons could mark a turning point in reducing intercommunal clashes, which have historically been driven by cycles of revenge attacks and resource competition.
