Women Group Supports Blind Football in Yei/Handout Photo
(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Visually impaired persons in Yei River County have received specialised footballs to support the formation of a blind football team, in an initiative aimed at promoting inclusion and participation in community life in South Sudan.
The donation was made by the Women Empowerment Initiative (WEI) during a handover ceremony held in Yei town. The organisation said the support is intended to ensure that persons with visual impairments can take part fully in social and recreational activities.
Speaking at the event, Lucky Constantine, a volunteer and coordinator with the organisation, said the initiative seeks to encourage equal participation at all levels of society. He said sports can play an important role in building confidence and breaking barriers for persons living with disabilities.
Mr Constantine explained that the footballs are specially designed with alarms inside them, allowing players to locate the ball by sound. He said this makes it possible for visually impaired players to actively engage in the game and compete as a team.
Representing the visually impaired community, Moses Asiki, chairperson under the Disability Inclusion Agency, welcomed the donation and thanked the organisation for recognising the needs of persons with disabilities. He said such support helps raise awareness and reduce stigma within the community.
Mr Asiki noted that despite progress, visually impaired persons continue to face many challenges, including limited access to opportunities and services. He called on partners and authorities to provide further assistance, particularly trained coaches with the skills needed to support blind football players.
Members of the visually impaired community also expressed appreciation for the donation. They said the initiative will help reduce stress, encourage social interaction and demonstrate that disability does not limit ability.
