(Aweil) – The Aweil Town Football Team is appealing to community members and well wishers for financial and material support ahead of the upcoming Aweil Peace Counties Tournament, scheduled to begin on 6 July 2025.
In a public call issued by the team’s management, the players and staff are urging individuals, community leaders, and supporters from Aweil and beyond to assist in any way they can.
The request includes cash contributions, material donations such as football boots, or any form of assistance that could help the team prepare adequately for the competition.
According to team captain Akoon Didi Santos, the team is facing serious financial difficulties that may hinder their participation if support is not secured.
The appeal emphasizes that the contribution of each community member can make a meaningful difference for the players representing Aweil Town on the pitch.
The Aweil Peace Tournament is an annual football event designed to bring together different counties of Aweil through sports, with the broader aim of promoting unity, peace, and reconciliation.
For many local teams, it is both a sporting event and a rare opportunity to foster solidarity and showcase talent from rural communities.
The Aweil Town Football Team has expressed its determination to represent the town with pride and dignity, but says it cannot do so without the backing of the public.
The players rely on personal resources and limited community donations, often falling short of covering essential needs such as transport, meals and training gear.
The team has not specified an exact financial target but encourages direct contributions to the designated contacts: Garang Garang Makak at +211 920 105 259 and Akoon Didi Santos at +211 981 508 765.
South Sudan’s local sports teams often struggle with funding due to limited government support and scarce private sponsorship.
Community initiatives like this one have become essential in keeping local football alive and engaging young people in constructive activities.
For young people in Aweil, football offers a positive outlet and a shared experience that transcends ethnic or political divisions.
The Team hopes to field a fully prepared and motivated squad by the tournament kickoff date.
