(Juba) – The Aweil Youth Union in Juba has announced that the upcoming “Aweil Peace Tournament” will feature eight football teams representing different communities and groups from Aweil. The tournament is intended to promote peace, unity, and youth engagement through sport.
According to details shared by organizers, the teams expected to compete are Aweil East, Aweil West, Aweil South, Aweil North, Aweil Centre, Aweil Town, All Stars, and 22 Brothers Football Team.
The announcement was made following the unveiling of the tournament’s official banner.
Preparations are already underway, with some teams beginning training sessions as they prepare for the kickoff date. The tournament is scheduled to begin on 6 July, though the final venue is yet to be disclosed.
The initiative, supported by youth leaders from the Aweil region now residing in Juba, aims to use football as a tool for community dialogue and reconciliation.
Sports events such as these have become increasingly popular as platforms for peacebuilding in South Sudan, particularly among young people.
Organizers say final match fixtures and logistical details will be released soon, and they are calling on supporters to rally behind their teams in a spirit of friendly competition and mutual respect.
