An inter-community football tournament has officially kicked off in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State, aiming to foster peace, unity, and reconciliation among young people across South Sudan’s diverse regions. The week long sports initiative, organised by national non governmental organisation Reconcile International in collaboration with the Yei County Department of Youth and Sports, began on Tuesday at Yei Freedom Square.
The initiative, called Sports for Peace, is designed to promote a culture of non violence and social cohesion by bringing together youth from various communities through football. The event is also being used as a platform to encourage trauma healing and mutual understanding following years of conflict in the region.

During the opening ceremony, Yei County Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme commended Reconcile International for its efforts and encouraged all participating teams to compete with respect and in the spirit of peace. “Let these games build bridges, not walls,” he told a crowd of enthusiastic spectators.
Mustafa Adam, Programmes Manager at Reconcile International, said sport can be a powerful tool for breaking down barriers between communities. “Through the unifying spirit of football, we will bring our communities together, break down divisions, and build lasting bonds of friendship and trust,” he stated.
The competition features eight teams from both within and beyond Yei River County. The teams include:
| Participating Team | Region |
|---|---|
| Yei River County Team | Central Equatoria |
| Lainya County Team | Central Equatoria |
| Morobo County Team | Central Equatoria |
| Kajo Keji County Team | Central Equatoria |
| Greater Bahr El Ghazal Team | Northern Region |
| Greater Upper Nile Team | Upper Nile Region |
| Eastern Equatoria Team | Eastern Equatoria |
| Western Equatoria Team | Western Equatoria |

The tournament will continue through 14 April 2025, with the final match expected to draw widespread attention across the state. Reconcile International has emphasised that the aim of the tournament is not only competition, but also reconciliation, dialogue, and building a lasting peace among the country’s youth.
This effort comes as part of broader initiatives in post conflict South Sudan to promote community-driven healing, social rebuilding, and peaceful co existence, especially among younger generations who have grown up in the shadow of civil war and political instability.
