(BOR, JONGLEI STATE) – An ICT Hub aimed at providing young people with digital skills, internet access and online learning opportunities has been officially opened in Bor, Jonglei State.
The facility is a joint effort by MTN South Sudan, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, and the organisation ORBIT.
The new centre offers free computer training, high speed internet and access to online courses delivered through Coursera.
The initiative is intended to create opportunities for young people to learn, work remotely, start small digital businesses and participate in the wider digital economy.
Speaking at the launch, the Telecommunication Undersecretary, who represented the National Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Engineer Thomas Gatkuoth Nyak, said the hub would contribute to both economic and social development in Greater Jonglei.
He stated that the facility aims to provide practical tools for the youth to improve their livelihoods through technology.
The Jonglei State Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Nyalele, who represented the Governor during the ceremony, welcomed the project but asked young people to use the internet responsibly.
She warned against the spread of misinformation and harmful online activities. She also appealed to MTN to improve communication network coverage in the other nine counties of Jonglei State where connectivity remains weak.
MTN South Sudan CEO Mapula Bodibe acknowledged the request and confirmed that the company is working on plans to expand its services.
She said the Bor ICT Hub is part of a wider effort to support education, innovation and digital access across the country.
“This centre is not only teaching computer skills, it is opening access to the digital economy,” Bodibe said. “Young people will now be able to learn new skills, work online and connect with opportunities from right here in Bor.”
The ICT Hub is expected to attract students, job seekers, entrepreneurs and individuals interested in gaining modern computer knowledge.
No fees will be charged for using the computer training services at the centre, according to a statement on MTN Portals.
