(JUBA) – The Central Equatoria State Security Committee has directed a crackdown on illegal tax collectors operating in Juba and other parts of the State.
The decision was made during the committee’s ordinary sitting on Tuesday, chaired by Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, the State Governor.
Hon. Leon Abe Brown, Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agency, told reporters that discussions focused on multiple taxation in local markets, which has contributed to rising prices of goods.
The committee resolved that only tax collectors officially deployed by recognised revenue institutions are authorised to collect taxes.
“We found that some self deployed groups are collecting taxes in markets, which is one of the causes of inflated prices. Relevant government revenue institutions must scrutinize those deployed in markets,” Hon. Abe said.
The committee also addressed concerns over land matters. Officials involved in illegal land acquisition were warned that the law will take action against them. The Minister stressed that land should be acquired legally through State institutions mandated to allocate plots.
“Some dignitaries are involving themselves in land grabbing. This is unacceptable,” Hon. Abe stated.
Despite these challenges, Hon. Abe said the overall security situation in Central Equatoria State remains relatively calm, with only a few isolated incidents reported. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing security concerns and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks.
According to the state government press unit CESGPU the directive is part of the State’s broader effort to stabilise markets, reduce inflationary pressures caused by illegal taxation and strengthen law enforcement in both urban and rural areas:
