
Upgraded Terminals and Runways Top Aviation Progress Report/PHOTO: Office of the President, Republic of South Sudan
(JUBA COUNTY) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has received a comprehensive progress report on the status of civil aviation reform in South Sudan. During a meeting held in Juba on Friday, 1 August 2025, the Director General of the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA), John Woja Elinana, updated the President on developments aimed at aligning the country’s aviation infrastructure with international standards.
John Woja described the SSCAA’s vision as one based on integrity, innovation and operational excellence. He said the authority was focused on building a sustainable and modern aviation system that meets the expectations of global aviation regulators and stakeholders. Woja emphasised that since assuming office, notable achievements had been made across the country’s aviation facilities.
Among the key infrastructure developments reported were terminal upgrades, runway extensions, improved lighting systems, enhanced parking areas, the construction of airport ring roads and increased airport security through access control systems and surveillance improvements.
The Director General also unveiled a 12 month investment plan designed to further advance the sector’s growth. No specific figures were disclosed during the briefing.
According to Woja, these reforms are expected to improve air connectivity, attract foreign and regional investment, drive economic expansion and support South Sudan’s integration into the East African and international aviation markets.
President Kiir expressed strong support for the progress made and reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritising aviation infrastructure development as part of its broader national growth strategy. He called on the Civil Aviation Authority to maintain momentum and ensure that all planned reforms meet international safety, operational and governance standards.
The President also stressed the importance of making South Sudan’s airports efficient, secure and competitive to position the country as a reliable gateway for regional and international air traffic.
The SSCAA oversees regulatory compliance, infrastructure improvements and the implementation of international aviation best practices across the country’s airports.
