(JUBA CITY) – The Governor of Central Equatoria State, Lt Gen Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, together with the National Minister of Roads and Bridges, Hon Simon Mijok Mijak, have conducted a detailed assessment of Juba’s main roads as part of a government effort to improve transport and infrastructure in the capital.
The inspection, which took place on Friday 12 September 2025, focused on identifying urgent repairs and upgrades required across the city. Officials examined potholes, drainage systems and traffic flow, which continue to affect residents and businesses daily.
The areas inspected included Juba Bridge, Freedom Bridge, Mauna–Dar Salam Road near Nana Corner and Hai Referendum Road. These sites were selected due to high levels of congestion, structural strain and accessibility challenges.
Eng John Khot Chol, Undersecretary at the National Ministry of Roads and Bridges, explained that the exercise followed directives from Vice President Dr Benjamin Bol Mel, who also chairs the Economic Cluster. He said the current work represents the first phase of a wider plan. The next stage will focus on reconstruction and the beautification of Juba’s urban road system.
He noted that the team found several cases of encroachment on public roads and walkways, especially near Juba Bridge and Freedom Bridge. He called on the public to cooperate by avoiding occupation of road reserves and pedestrian areas so that the government can deliver planned services.
Hon Clement Maring Samuel, the State Minister of Roads and Bridges, highlighted the importance of community cooperation when construction begins. He said both national and state authorities are committed to working together to improve Juba’s roads and reduce congestion.
“Once key roads are reopened, the pressure on busy routes such as the Ministries Road will be eased significantly.”
He added that a formal report will be presented to Vice President Dr Benjamin Bol Mel for immediate action, depending on the availability of funding.
Juba City Mayor, H.W Johnson Swaka Nishak, said the assessment also considered alternative routes to link central Juba with western neighbourhoods. He explained that most residents live in areas such as Gudele, Gurei and Jebel Lemon, which currently rely heavily on the single Gudele Road. He emphasised that new connections are vital for easing congestion and ensuring faster movement across the city.
