(JUBA) – Work is moving forward at Juba International Airport where a new firefighting water tank is being built to improve emergency response and safety. The project is led by the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority (SSCAA) in partnership with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
Site Engineer Girma Sirme from Atlantic Construction Company said the tank’s foundation goes 1.8 metres underground. Workers are completing the base before placing J-bolts that will hold the steel structure. When finished, the tank will stand about 10 metres tall and hold 32,000 litres of water.
The SSCAA said the new tank will help firefighters at the airport respond faster and more effectively during emergencies. The project is part of wider efforts to make Juba International Airport safer for travellers, staff, and airlines using South Sudan’s busiest airport.
Officials said the water tank shows how partnerships between the government and international agencies can improve the country’s aviation services. The new facility will also help build confidence among pilots and passengers who use Juba Airport, which connects South Sudan with other parts of Africa and the world.
According to the aviation authority, this is one of several projects being carried out to upgrade airport facilities. Other plans include improving the runway, installing modern navigation equipment, and training more aviation personnel.
The project supports South Sudan’s goal of meeting international safety standards and making its aviation sector stronger and more reliable.
