(JUBA) – South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Monday Semaya Kumba, met with Switzerland’s Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Ambassador Sylvin Astier, on 28 July 2025, to discuss ongoing peace efforts and economic developments in the country.
The meeting, described as friendly and constructive, took place as part of the government’s continuing diplomatic outreach to strengthen international partnerships that support South Sudan’s stability and development goals.
Minister Kumba welcomed the Swiss delegation and reaffirmed the importance of the long standing partnership between South Sudan and Switzerland.
During the talks, Minister Kumba briefed Ambassador Astier on the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement, pointing out recent achievements and areas still requiring international support. He noted the government’s efforts to maintain security, improve governance structures and prepare for upcoming elections.
The minister highlighted the role of development partners like Switzerland in supporting peace implementation through both financial and technical assistance.
The minister also gave an overview of the economic challenges facing South Sudan, including high inflation, limited infrastructure and ongoing recovery from years of conflict. He acknowledged the need for deeper international cooperation to address poverty, promote job creation and boost investor confidence.
Ambassador Astier expressed appreciation for South Sudan’s continued commitment to peace and acknowledged the complexity of the country’s post conflict situation. He reaffirmed Switzerland’s readiness to stand with South Sudan as it seeks sustainable solutions through inclusive governance, improved service delivery, and responsible economic management.
Rising prices of basic commodities and fuel remain a concern for both government and development partners.
South Sudan and Switzerland have shared diplomatic ties since the country’s independence in 2011, with Switzerland supporting peace and humanitarian efforts through multilateral and bilateral channels. The Swiss government has been particularly active in promoting dialogue, mediation and support for civil society organisations across the Horn of Africa.
