Hon. Daniel Arama CES, Juba
Warm greetings from Juba, South Sudan.
I am Hon. Daniel Arama, CES – Juba.
Today, we celebrate with pride, reflection and hope as we mark the 14th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of South Sudan, a moment of deep historical importance that continues to shape our national identity.
Fourteen years ago, on 9 July 2011, our national flag was raised for the first time. The world watched as a new nation was born, built on the dreams, sacrifices and unwavering determination of its people. We remember the joy, the tears and the unity that spread across the country on that day. It was a powerful symbol of a people who had endured decades of struggle in their fight for freedom and self rule.
As we commemorate this day, we must first honour our heroes and heroines, those who gave their lives so that South Sudan could stand proud among the nations of the world. Their legacy lives on in every step we take towards peace, justice and prosperity. We also recognise the resilience of our people who, despite hardship and displacement, have held on to hope and continued to believe in the promise of this land.
Over the past fourteen years, we have made meaningful, though often difficult, steps towards building a peaceful, inclusive and democratic society. Infrastructure is slowly taking shape, schools have reopened, communities are rebuilding and national institutions are gradually being strengthened.
Yet, we must speak honestly. South Sudan still faces serious challenges: ongoing conflict, economic hardship, limited access to basic services and political divisions that delay our path to healing and national unity. Let this day serve as a reminder that independence was not the end of our journey, but the beginning of our shared responsibility to build a just, united and peaceful nation.
Now is the time for unity, not only in words but through real action. We must silence the guns, embrace our diversity and commit to national reconciliation. We must create space for women and youth in leadership roles and make sure every community, no matter how distant, feels the presence and support of our national government.
As South Sudanese, we are stronger together. No tribe, region, or political group can build this country on its own. But together, with a shared vision, we can move forward.
Let the 14th anniversary of our independence renew our commitment to a brighter future. Let it remind us of our great potential, our duty, and the eyes of the world still watching and hoping that Africa’s youngest nation will overcome its challenges and fulfil its promise.
To our partners and friends around the world, thank you for your continued support. South Sudan still needs you, your solidarity, your guidance and your confidence in our journey.
May this Independence Day be one of reflection and renewed dedication, a day to reaffirm our shared will to build a South Sudan our children will one day be proud of.
May God bless you all.
May God bless the Republic of South Sudan.
Happy Independence Day!
