(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has officially handed over a newly built Public Prosecutor’s Office to local authorities in Yei Town Payam.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Commissioner of Yei River County Hon. Emmanuel Taban Seme welcomed the project and described it as a vital foundation for justice and accountability. He said the office will help ensure that legal matters are handled fairly and efficiently.
“The importance of this office lies in its legal and administrative role in ensuring that both criminal and public interest cases are handled properly and impartially,” Commissioner Taban said.
He thanked UNMISS for the support and urged continuous cooperation between international partners and local authorities.
Ms. Njoki Rahab Kinyanjui, Head of the UNMISS Juba Field Office, commended the government for its collaboration in implementing the project. She assured that UNMISS would also provide mobility support to the department to strengthen its operations.
The new Public Prosecutor’s Office will serve as the main centre for prosecuting crimes, ensuring public safety and protecting victims in Yei River County. The facility will enable local authorities to investigate cases, file charges, and present them before the courts to ensure offenders are held accountable.
Legal experts say the office will also improve coordination between law enforcement agencies and the community, helping to address cases faster and build public trust in the justice system.
The handover ceremony was attended by local government officials, representatives of the justice sector, community leaders and members of UNMISS.
According to UNMISS, the legal project is part of broader efforts by the UN mission to promote peace, rule of law and stability in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria region.
