(Juba) – Police in Juba have launched a major operation against two rival gangs known locally as “ODA” and “West Coast”, resulting in the arrest of more than 20 individuals in the Sherikat neighborhood.
The arrests came in the aftermath of a reported sexual assault involving a 16 year old girl, allegedly committed by members of these gangs.
The case sparked widespread public anger and renewed concern over the growing influence of violent youth groups in the capital.
Law enforcement authorities acted swiftly after the incident, conducting a series of coordinated raids across Sherikat.
The operation led by city police units uncovered materials believed to be linked to witchcraft and voodoo practices. Investigators say these findings could indicate that the gangs are involved in ritualistic activities, raising additional fears about the groups’ motives and methods.
According to police, the recovered items are being examined as evidence, and their nature has prompted a broader investigation into the extent of organized crime linked to the gangs.
The bizarre findings have shocked local residents, many of whom were already fearful of gang violence. The involvement of supernatural elements in criminal acts has added a disturbing dimension to the problem.
Community response has been strong. Local leaders, parents, and youth advocates have called for increased police presence and a firm, long term strategy to deal with gang related violence.
They argue that reactive measures are not enough, especially when young people are increasingly vulnerable to both becoming victims and being recruited into gang life.
Juba’s police spokesperson, Major Daniel Kiden, confirmed that the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. He assured the public that the police are committed to ensuring justice is served.
Kiden also appealed to the community to assist with ongoing efforts by sharing any information that could lead to further arrests or disrupt gang activities.
“This is a serious issue that affects the safety of our communities, particularly our youth,” said Kiden. “We encourage residents to remain vigilant and work closely with the police to restore peace in our neighborhoods.”
Authorities have acknowledged the challenges ahead but say the crackdown in Sherikat is just the beginning of a broader push to dismantle gang networks in Juba and beyond.
Local officials have not yet disclosed the full identity of those arrested or whether charges have been formally filed.
